On the day the federal Coalition launched its education policy no Liberal candidate considered public education important enough to attend or even send a representative to attend the Newcastle Public Education Forum.

Despite the snub, parents, teachers and community members packed into the Beaches Hotel to hear candidates from Newcastle, Shortland and Charlton electorates share their perspective on education and in particular Gonski and federal funding.Labor's Sharon Claydon said schools in the Newcastle electorate would be $34.1 million worse off under the two Abbotts Jaimie, the Newcastle candidate, and Tony, the Coalition leader.

Jaimie Abbott and John Church were not elected to the federal parliament at the September 7 election.
