The Anna Stewart Program gave me a valuable insight into how a union works. As well, over the two weeks, I attended many meetings which discussed fundamental issues for teachers in schools, TAFE and the Corrective Services.
I met and talked with Federation staff in the Surry Hills offices, learned about the valuable role the library plays and met with activist groups from the broader community.
I attended a rally at Parramatta, helped find policy documents, sat in on an industrial relations court case, attended a Friday night abd Saturday Council meeting and met and asked questions of a NSW state politician.
The two weeks encouraged and inspired and gave me skills to assist my TAFE colleagues facing an era of dramatic change, including teacher cuts.
Colleagues at Teachers Federation House are professional, friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to include the “Annas” in their work schedules.
They also value input from teachers fresh from the workplace.
Two teachers participate in the two-week program and this helps greatly in adapting to a new regime.
