Australian Education Union (AEU) Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos is to take up a position with Education International in the new year.
He will coordinate the global teacher union response to the commercial privatisation agenda, notably the rise of the ‘edu-businesses’ and ‘for-profit’ schooling.
AEU Federal Secretary Susan Hopgood said Mr Gavrielatos had served with great distinction and his departure would be a significant loss for the union.
“He has always been a passionate and determined advocate for high quality public education and should be immensely proud of what he has achieved as the Federal President.”
Mr Gavrielatos said: “It has been a privilege and an honour to have led our union over the last seven years. The dedication of our members has motivated and inspired me during this time.”
“The Gonski campaign has been the highlight. We have made great progress and I know that effort will continue.”
Federation President Maurie Mulheron said Angelo had been pivotal in shaping the schools funding campaign since he took up the Presidency of the AEU.
“We thank Angelo and wish him well. I know that he will continue to advise and assist us in our campaign, albeit in a different role.”
Prior to working at the AEU Mr Gavrielatos was Federation’s Deputy President.
