Stop TAFE cuts activists will hold a rally at the NSW Government Community Cabinet to be held at Club Central Hurstville, 2 Crofts Avenue, Hurstville on Monday, May 19.
The rally will be held at the entrance of the club from 5pm onwards. The community cabinet meeting starts at 6.30pm.
A similiar rally was held at Casula on April 7.
Teachers and interested community members gathered outside the Bella Forte Events Centre to let the NSW Government know that they would not stand by and see our world class public TAFE system systematically dismantled and privatised.
The enormous cuts to TAFE over the past 12 months have resulted in a drastic loss of teacher expertise, huge fee increases for students, larger class sizes and reduced locations to undertake study.
If the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled reforms go ahead as planned in January 2015 students will only have one shot at a TAFE course. After that they will have to pay thousands of dollars to study. The NSW Government is also opening the door wider to private operators to access taxpayer’s funds to make profit at the expense of TAFE students.
Maxine Sharkey is Assistant General Secretary (Post School Education) and Kathy Nicholson is a TAFE Organiser.
