New online module to explore grammar

An online grammar professional leaning module is being offered by the School of Education at the University of Wollongong in partnership with the Centre for Professional Learning (CPL).

Coming to Grips with Grammar in English K–10 is the first of a series of three modules making up the Knowledge about Language Unit. Successful completion of all modules in this unit may enable participants to apply for academic credit to the Postgraduate coursework program within Education at the University of Wollongong.

Dr Pauline Jones will present the module. She is a senior lecturer in Language in Education at the University of Wollongong. Dr Jones teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in language and literacy, and has taught English and literacy to children and adults in Australia and overseas.

“I’m looking forward to presenting this new online module. It aims to familiarise teachers with the ‘Knowing about Language’ requirements of the new NSW English K–10 English syllabus,” Dr Jones said.

“Together we’ll look at the approach to grammar underpinning the syllabus and explore how this approach helps teachers to support students’ literacy growth.

“I’ve assembled a suite of materials developed from our classroom-based research involving colleagues from universities and schools. These materials include expert explanations, vignettes of classroom practice, online discussions, practice exercises and links to useful resources. There will be opportunities to trial activities in the classroom, to share those experiences and to build a repertoire of teaching strategies,” Dr Jones said.

The special rate for financial members of the NSW Teachers Federation for the first module is $180. A maximum of 30 Federation members will be eligible for the special rate. Teachers interested in participating can apply through the University of Wollongong website at

University of Wollongong is the endorsed provider with the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) for this module. This module will count towards 12 hours for maintenance of accreditation at Proficient Teacher level. The module will be delivered between July 28 and September 2. Enrolments close on July 21.
