International Women’s Day breakfast events will be held in Sydney, Canberra and the Hunter on March 7.

The Brisbane breakfast on March 6 will be broadcast online from 7am (Brisbane time).

On March 8, Sydney’s traditional International Women’s Day march will start at the Sydney Town Hall at 11am and proceed to Hyde Park, where there will be stalls and entertainment.

For more information on these events visit the Australian National Committee for UN Women’s website at www.unwomen.org.au.

The committee has chosen “Ending poverty for women and girls through economic empowerment” as the theme for the day.

According to the United Nations 70 per cent of the global poor are women, and despite women performing two-thirds of the world’s work they earn less than 10 per cent of the world’s wages. Economic empowerment is a key to lifting women out of poverty, and it is vital to achieving true gender equality.

What can workplaces do to celebrate?

  • Invite a guest speaker to address a school assembly
  • Hold a mufti day to raise money for a women’s charity
  • Organise to watch the UN Women’s Brisbane IWD breakfast broadcast
  • Send photos of your International Women’s Day event to nswtfwomcoord@nswtf.org.au
