Teachers Federation consolidates AEU tie

The Australian Education Union NSW Teachers Federation Branch has applied to the NSW Industrial Registrar for registration to represent the employees covered by the NSW Teachers Federation, which made a corresponding application for the Registrar to cancel its registration as the representative body. The application is the culmination of several years’ work to harmonise the rules of the two organisations with a view to creating a single organisation that represents existing members in both the state and federal jurisdictions.

For many years there have been two parallel organisations, one being the federally registered AEU (NSW Branch) and the other the state registered NSW Teachers Federation. Because of the shift of some of the Federation’s members into the federal jurisdiction, notably members working for TAFE, it was decided that there should be a single entity registered both federally and at the state level. Both the Teachers Federation and the AEU Branch have adopted rules that facilitate the change to a single organisation. Subject to the decision of the NSW Industrial Court the intention is to move all the assets, employees and liabilities on the Teachers Federation to the AEU NSW Teachers Federation Branch. All Federation members already are members of the AEU and the change will have no effect on members.
