Federation is deeply saddened by the news of the death in Nairobi of Australian school teacher, Gabrielle Maina.
As an English teacher, Gabrielle was known for her passion for poetry as well as her work mentoring students from low-SES backgrounds, which included running a homework centre for students.
She was an Italian speaker and teacher who was also actively involved in Co.As.It, the Sydney association providing Italian language and community services.
Gabrielle had also been an active member of Federation, supporting her colleagues in public schools by serving as a workplace representative in multiple schools.
Gabrielle was currently on a leave of absence from her role as a teacher in NSW public schools in order to travel and work overseas.
A 40-year-old mother of two, her untimely and tragic death in Nairobi, Kenya, has shocked her colleagues and friends at Federation.
She is remembered as a talented teacher, gifted pianist, skilled editor, avid traveller, generous colleague and friend, but trumping all of that , she was a formidable woman and exceptional mother.
President of Camden-Campbelltown Association Dianne Byers said: "Gabrielle was a valued member and Councillor for the Camden-Campbelltown Teachers Association.
"She never hesitated to speak up but always did so with sensitivity and compassion."
Federation extends condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
