85 years of caring

Federation’s foremost charity, Stewart House, turned 85 this month, baking an enormous birthday cake that a group of students from Bathurst, Orange and Lachlan were on hand to share (see right).

Set in an idyllic spot on South Curl Curl Beach, Stewart House has provided healthcare, mentoring and a respite break for more than 200,000 public school students since it opened as a “Preventorium” (see 1931 poster below) against childhood illness during the hard years of the 1930s Depression. “What we provide gives public school children a break in their circumstances and we really do see a change in them during their stay,” CEO Graeme Philpott said at the birthday celebrations.
