Former students and teachers of Camden High School’s old site who have health problems they believe may be linked to attendance at the school are being urged to contact health authorities.
An information sheet on the Department of Education and Communities’ website outlines that parts of an old gasworks site located in John Street, Camden were incorporated into the school site in 1970 and 1981. In 1995 gasworks pipework was unearthed, with contaminated waste identified in 1996. The Department reports the waste was capped and contained on the site in early 1997. The school was relocated to Cawdor Road in 2001.
The Department advises that former students or teachers should contact the South Western Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit on (02) 9515 9420. The Department is available to listen to concerns and make appropriate referrals. Contact the public liaison officer on (02) 9561 8000.
