Federation has launched a “Future Teachers” website and Facebook page to provide advice and support to student members and those new teachers just at the beginning of their careers.
They back up the work Federation already does with student teachers in universities around the state.
The website provides advice on professional experience (practicum) which is such an important component of any teacher education course. There is practical advice on lesson preparation and legal issues that might affect student teachers on in-school placement.
Federation has put together an expert panel of experienced teachers to provide advice, support and general information about being a teacher in the NSW public education system. The union wants to mentor the next generation of teachers and potential Federation activists.
The website also has important links to the wider group of teacher services such as Teachers Federation Health, Teachers Mutual Bank, First State Super and Federation’s Centre for Professional Learning.
The website and Facebook page will be backed up with a student teacher e-newsletter that will go out four times a year with stories and events targeted at future teachers.
Please encourage student teachers on practicum to not only join Federation as a student member but urge them to check out the website and Facebook page. Student membership of the Federation is free while they are enrolled in a teacher education course. There are also incentives to upgrade their membership when they actually start to work as a casual or temporary teacher towards the end of their course, if they are already a student member of the union.
John Dixon is the Assistant General Secretary (Communications and Administration) and Kate Ambrose is the Membership and Training Officer.
